MONICA STEMMERMANN

home is where the heart is

00:00 / 01:06

This textile is a free-hand knit piece, and I also needle-felted the red heart. I was inspired to create this in response to the Lounge’s guiding questions of how we can adorn spaces and create art to give us a sense of home. When I was initially envisioning my piece, I was hoping to portray that home and feelings of comfort exist in multiple places. While the final version of this piece doesn’t necessarily reflect that since the design has changed, I ironically experienced this in the process of creating this textile. I had started making this piece when I was at my parents house over winter break, and I realized I had left certain yarn and knitting needles at my apartment in Worcester. When I returned to Worcester, I made additions and added onto the existing parts of my piece, so in the end the textile was a gradual process that was created in my different places that I call home. I hoped to convey this sense of warmth with warm colors and a mix of textures, and these different types of stitches, colors, and textures all coming together represents a vision of home and comfort that is not limited to just one place.
