My biggest inspiration will forever be my grandmother, Judith, who’s hundreds of clay portraits somehow always seem to look like herself. With her and many others, I aim to fight against high-art on behalf of craft. I also have a special spot in my heart for Käthe Kollwitz, Miriam Schapiro, and Judy Chicago.

 

 

In this work, I explore anonymity while playing with proportions and oversimplification using references from family photos and self-portraits. I embroidered expressions into tablecloths, bedsheets, and curtains to construct bulging forms. Made during the second year of lockdown, my Frankenstein faces aim to stifle a space by padding it with fabric and convey the feeling of searching for a familiar face in a crowd.
